Maintenance of masonry structures
While masonry is an extremely durable building material, the presence of moisture and water vapor in the atmosphere can, over time, negatively impact the stability of the structure. Water expands as it freezes and when it is contained within a wall system, expansion and cracking of masonry can be expected to occur as a result. In addition:
- Clay brick expands over time while concrete products shrink, which may cause cracking or other problems.
- All materials are subject to some deterioration, so periodic maintenance is required.
